Garden Weed Control:  Methods to Eliminate Weeds Once and for All

It is a common misconception that by just applying chemicals that control weeds you will be able to prevent it from over running your soil bed. Some types of weeds do not respond to some weed chemicals like glyphosate. In short, it takes more than just weed-killing chemicals to save your plants from nutrient starvation due to weed infestation.

The first step in weed prevention is to understand everything about weeds. And the second is you should be able to answer basic questions like what are the different types of weeds and the ideal environment for weed growth. These two basic knowledge will give you an idea on what is the best approach to eliminate all types of weeds.

Think of the weeds as your plants. Some plants require more sunlight to grow while some require less, and if you treat all your plants like you treat one of it then some will die and some will prosper. Weeds, like plants have special environmental requirements in order to grow. Knowing this will help you eliminate weeds in your garden once and for all.

Controlling Weed Growth

Controlling the weed growth before they can infest your soil bed is the best way to eliminate the weeds. Apply at least 4 inches of mulch in your soil bed to stop the roots of the weeds from growing. It is advisable to apply mulch on the soil bed at least once a year since mulch lose their effectiveness overtime.

Simple and direct approach Works Best

Manually removing or preventing the weeds from growing is an effective method in controlling weed growth. Some manual methods in removing weed growth are:

  • Pour boiling water on the weeds that are growing on the cracks of your driveway.
  • Hoe your sea bed regularly and make sure to hoe before the weeds flower. Make sure to rip the weeds out including its roots. This method will not only remove the weeds but will also add nutrients to the soil as the weeds decompose and add structure to the soil.
  • Using a lawn weeder with two sharpened tine and a leverage point to hand pull the weeds is also an effective method in removing the weeds. Remove the weeds completely and fill the gaping hole with top dressing mix or with coarse sand.

Removing Weeds over Large Areas

Although manual methods can completely eliminate the weeds in your garden the task will simply be tedious if you have a large garden. Two weeks before planting place a large, black sheet of plastic on the soil and remove it a day before planting. The heat trapped by the black plastic will kill most if not all of the weeds including its seeds.

Knowing the Weeds

You can get information regarding everything in the internet including the different types of weeds. Know the weeds that grow in your country and look for methods to eliminate them. Weeds are classified according to their flower type, leaves, color, etc.
