Gardening Tips

Gardening is in general known as practice of growing plants. While most of the plants are grown because of their appearance, their flowers, foliage or for their dyes but some useful plants are grown with the sole purpose of consumption may that be eating or for medicinal purposes. Someone who practices gardening is known as a gardener. The process of gardening requires active participation on the gardener’s part and can be labor intensive sometimes. Few tips are given here to aid the budding gardeners and to reduce their labor wherever possible.

Lawn Care:

  • If one is going for a grass lawn, then the choice of grass should be made on basis of season. Choice can be made between warm season grasses (Zoysia grass, St. Augustine grass, Bermuda grass) and cool season grasses (ryegrass, bluegrass etc.)
  • Also type of usage of grass should be kept in mind. For example Zoysia grass can survives tough climates while rye grass needs frequent watering.

Plants:

  • Plants are drawn towards sunlight which makes their leaves and stems bend over. This can be avoided by rotating the plants a quarter of a turn every few days.

Watering:

  • Water is most essential for plants but it is as important for other living beings also. So special care should be taken while watering the plants and conservation of water should be maximized.
  • One way to judge whether the compost inside the clay pot is dry or wet is by tapping a side of clay pot. A dull note shows that no water is required while a ringing note indicates the need of water.
  • If too much or too less water is given to the plants then wilting of the plants begin. Healthy stem and leaves indicates that sufficient water is being supplied.
  • Small plants require less water as compared to large plants.
  • Large plants which are planted in small pots need frequent watering.
  • The amount of water needed is governed by the type of compost used.
  • Watering is best when done in early hours of the day. Watering the plants in the evening especially in winters should be avoided.
  • Plants in plastic pots require less water than the plants in clay pots.

Humidity:

  • Proper amount of moisture in the air gives a boost to the growth and health of plants.
  • Leaves of many plants are benefited by a light misting of water but a special care should be given so that moisture does not get on the flowers.
  • Mist spray should not be done when plants are kept in sunlight as water droplets act as lenses and burn the leaves causing damage to the plants.

Grooming and care:

  • Flowers should be removed as soon as they begin to fade. And they should be removed properly by removing flower stalks together with flower else they encourage diseases.
  • Large leaves can be cleaned using a damp, soft cloth to prevent dirt and dust from settling on the leaves.
